Hug -a-Thug. That’s the message members of the North Carolina State AFL-CIO is giving out to visitors at CarolinaFest and festivities during the Democratic convention in Charlotte.
In addition to hugs, AFL-CIO members gave out union appreciation cards which highlighted union contributions. Reportedly 500 hugs were given out by NALC, CWA, Newspaper Guild, IUE, AFGE, Teamsters, Operating engineers and APWU.
According to information on the AFL-CIO web site, the campaign is aimed at poking fun at conservative attempts to scapegoat union members. And here I thought my apprehension was a by-product of the numerous news accounts detailing brutish behavior by unruly union members.
The nice lady in the picture doesn’t look at all like the brooding, menacing characters who pop up in news accounts. But I guess that tells me it’s time I have my biases exposed.
