2012 Early Voting Update

As I looked through the absentee voting data this morning I was surprised to find that 11 counties have not reporting absentee by-mail votes yet. (See chart below) Most of the 11 missing counties are very small, but Durham, Johnston and Rowan were also in the list. These three counties reported that they had not “scanned” any of their returned ballots yet – Durham said they had “hundreds”.

Wake is also a surprise, in that they don’t even make it into the top 10 counties reporting number of ballots returned. In fact they are the 23rd county on the list with just 169 votes cast. Wake’s excuse – they were one of the last counties to begin to mail ballots to voters this year and they are just now getting some of the ballots returned from the voters.

The top ten counties in terms of people voting so far are: Mecklenburg (985), Forsyth (806), Guilford (801), Buncombe (404), Cumberland (347), Pitt (301), Gaston (283), Iredell (282), Moore (280), and Cabarrus (265).

As of Thursday, September 27 (keeping in mind more than 1 in 10 counties are not reporting their returned ballots), 87,072 voters have requested absentee ballots and 10,596 ballots have been returned and accepted by the county boards. Republicans have returned 5,315 ballots, Democrats – 3,273, unaffiliated voters have cast 1,987 votes and Libertarians 21.

But of course all you have to do is click here to go to NC Vote Tracker and get much more information on early voting.

This column was an excellent public service – there’s really no excuse for counties not to post ballots when received or within a day or two thereafter — voters who mail them in begin to get concerned about what happened when they check their status online. I know Wake finally mailed its civilian ballots Friday the 21st — I got mine in the mail the 22nd, sent it back right away and it was posted as received the 25th.

It’s now down to 7 counties unreporting as of Monday morning – Durham staff came in on Sunday and posted 200+ ballots as received and Johnston did theirs Friday or Saturday. Thanks again for pushing back on this
